Equity's History

One of the first results of the establishment of OUTReach
in the Summer of 1996 was that a committee formed to investigate the status
of domestic partner benefits at The University of Arizona and at the 2
other state universities. After uncovering a 1992
Campus Climate Survey for Gays, Lesbians, and Bisexuals by a group
known as Equity (which had since become inactive) the committee decided
not to reinvent the wheel and became known, thereafter as Equity.
Knowing that any change in benefits policies would require
the collaborative efforts of all the Arizona Universities, contacts were
made and in June of 1997, representatives from The UA, ASU, ASU East, and
ASU West met in Casa Grande. Since then, a representive from NAU has joined
our efforts and we have become "Equity: A Statewide Coalition for Benefits
Parity at Arizona Universities.
