| Special Features
The Doctor of Audiology program (Au.D.) at the University
of Arizona offers a unique opportunity for students who are interested
in gaining clinical and research training from a long-established
program that is consistently among the top 10 in the country (U.S.
News and World Report, America's Best Graduate Schools). We offer
a distinctive blend of "Science and the Heart", and the
active interaction of our students and faculty is at the core of
this highly successful program.
Our research and clinical faculty
work together to create an atmosphere that truly fulfills the mission
of the University of Arizona, as a "Student-Centered Research
University".
Some of the special features of our program include:
UNUSUAL LOCATION WITH A MULTICULTURAL EMPHASIS:

Tucson is located in the Sonoran Desert, which offers
opportunities throughout the year for exploring nature and learning
about the many cultures that have made this area what it is today.
For more information on the region go to Visit
Tucson, Arizona Guide.
Each year, students accompany our clinical faculty
to Escuela de Audicion y Lingua in Hermosillo, Mexico to work with
children and their families. This is a special experience for our
students and faculty, who have been involved in this program for
over 15 years.
CLINICAL OPPORTUNITIES AND COMMUNITY OUTREACH:
Students become involved in clinical experiences early
in their program of study. Here, first-semester graduate students are
learning the basics of making impressions of the ear.
Students in Audiologic Rehabilitation gain first-hand
experience of the effects of sensory changes associated with aging during
an annual classroom visit from residents at a local retirement facility.
The Audiology Department maintains active liaisons with retirement
facilities throughout southern Arizona giving students direct experience
in working with elderly persons in their own living environments.
One of the many outreach activities is our department's
participation in the Festival of Hope, which is an annual multi-professional
healthcare event in which services are provided to low-income people.
Thousands of people pass through the Tucson Convention Center in
downtown Tucson to receive health care that they would not be able
to afford otherwise.
A Swiss cultural exchange program is available in which a student lives in Basel,
Switzerland for 5 weeks and works together with physicians and researchers at the Kantonsspital
Basel and with Phonak AG in Stafen, Switzerland.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES:
An annual fun-filled event is the "Lips vs.
Lobes" faculty playoffs. Faculty in Speech-Language Pathology
"compete" against faculty in Audiology in a NSSLHA-sponsored
fundraising activity.
Students and faculty come together at the beginning
of each year to start the year off right with an orientation breakfast
and get-acquainted picnic.
